User resource limits

Partition access and storage depend on account permissions. Check authorized partitions, storage use, and CPU, GPU, and memory requirements before submitting.

Overview

ResourceRule
Default storage stated on this page1 TB per user
Additional storageRequires administrator approval
Internal usersRMB 40 per additional TB per month
External usersRMB 60 per additional TB per month (1.5× internal rate)
Free partitionqfree, default time limit of 3 hours
Other compute partitionsNo default time limit specified
Partition accessOnly explicitly authorized partitions

Account-specific storage

The Chinese resource-limits page states a default of 1 TB, while the fee schedule specifies 50 GB for free accounts and 1 TB for paid accounts. Check your account's actual quota in CHESS or with the administrator.

Storage

Request additional capacity from the administrator. Usage beyond the included allowance is charged in whole TB, rounding up. The billing period is usually a calendar month, using the maximum storage usage during that period.

In CHESS, open My Resources (我的资源) to view usage and soft and hard limits. The following commands show total home-directory usage and the sizes of entries in the current directory:

bash
# Show total home-directory usage
du -sh ~

# Show usage of entries in the current directory
du -sh ./*

Storage is not a backup

Remove temporary files, duplicates, and unneeded logs, and back up important data. File writes and job output may fail when the quota is reached.

Partitions

Check authorized partitions in CHESS. To inspect cluster state:

bash
sinfo

Specify a partition with -p or --partition:

bash
# Select a partition on the command line
sbatch -p qcpu_23i job.sh

Or include it in the job script:

bash
#!/bin/bash
#SBATCH --job-name=my_job
#SBATCH --partition=qcpu_23i
#SBATCH --output=%x-%j.out

# Insert your computation commands here

Specifying a partition does not grant access to it. If submission fails, check the spelling and your authorization; request access if needed.

Time limits

  • qfree has a default limit of 3 hours; the scheduler terminates jobs at their time limit.
  • Other compute partitions currently have no default time limit specified.
  • Login nodes are for setup, compilation, file management, and short tests. A single process may run for at most 60 minutes.

Set a realistic time request even on paid partitions to aid scheduling and troubleshooting.

Resource requests

Request CPU cores according to actual parallelism; avoid reserving many cores for a single-threaded program. Choose the appropriate GPU partition and verify that the application detects the allocated GPU. Use large-memory nodes when needed. Submit production calculations through Slurm, and monitor with squeue -u $USER.

Before submission, verify partition permissions, storage quota and free space, input/output access, software availability, CPU/GPU counts, memory, and wall time.
